Google has announced a new policy that allows people under 18 or their parents or guardians to request the removal of images in Google search. This does not necessarily remove them from the internet and Google suggests that you also contact the website to request they remove the image.  According to a Google blog post “With a newly implemented policy, anyone under the age of 18, or their parent or guardian, can now request the removal of their images from Search results, following a few simple steps. This means these images won’t appear in the Images tab or as thumbnails in any feature in Google Search.”

The process requires the minor or their parent, guardian, or authorized representative to fill out a form which includes their contact information and the web address of the image you want removed. The person requesting the removal must be either the individual themself, a legal guardian for the individual, or an authorized representative of either.  The policy does not cover web pages with both text and images but is designed to “limit the presence of images in Google search results.”

For the request to be considered the image must include an identifiable individual who is currently under 18, though Google will also “remove images in the tragic situation of a child who has died before reaching the age of 18.”
