Social media snapshot: Indonesia

About a third, or 82 million, of Indonesia’s 250 million+ people are online, reports (via the EFE news service). That’s twice as many Internet users in “the world’s third-largest democratic country” since about a year ago, based on 2013 World Bank data, and 69 million of them are on Facebook. Twitter appears to be Indonesia’s 2nd most popular social media service, with 20 million active users. “In fact, president-elect Jokowi, one of the most popular Indonesians on Twitter with 2.41 million followers, carried out a significant part of his election campaign through social networks by reaching out to internet users,” according to LaPrensa SA. Through, Facebook and telecommunications company Ericsson have struck a deal with Indonesian mobile carrier XL Axiata to make the Internet more accessible and affordable in the Indonesian archipelago.
