ConnectSafely.org is seeking a highly motivated, energetic and passionate person to serve as its Washington, D.C.-based policy director. The person will represent ConnectSafely in Washington and help us further our mission to advance Internet safety, privacy, security and media literacy for people of all ages and to promote youth participation and rights as well as protection in connected media. Fluency in social media and public speaking skills are essential.
Duties will include keeping abreast of current and potential federal and state legislation (all 50 states) that could have impact on Internet or mobile privacy, safety or security, as well as education technology and connected learning.
The position includes monitoring and analyzing relevant activity on Capitol Hill, in the Executive Branch, and in peer organizations at the national level and in state legislatures. This will include representing ConnectSafely at East Coast meetings (the rest of the staff is in California) and occasional national conferences and traveling to state capitals when necessary.
The policy director will also engage in consensus building with like-minded organizations around key issues in Internet safety, privacy and security, including youth rights and Internet governance.
The position also involves communicating with and briefing members of Congress and state legislatures, their staff and agency officials through in-person meetings, written communications and phone calls.
Strong writing skills are a requirement as the policy director will assist with the development of ConnectSafely’s parents’ guides and other publications.
While ConnectSafely does not endorse specific legislation, we can educate the public and policy makers on both the positive and potential unintended consequences of proposed legislation.
The candidate must be willing to work long (and odd) hours if necessary.
